Fully owned and operated by Etisalat UAE, Etisalat Afghanistan is a relatively new mobile network operator providing mobile coverage in Afghanistan since 2006. The network is part of the 16 major mobile telecommunications providers managed by Etisalat UAE, the parent company. Today, the Etisalat group boasts 32 million subscribers with its services ranging from mobile to internet to fixed-line services.
Since its inception in 1976, Etisalat has remained committed in terms of keeping its overall telecommunications infrastructure on par with the latest improvements in mobile technology. In 1994, the mobile network was the first to introduce GSM technology in the Middle East. And in 2006, it too pioneered the implementation of 3G infrastructure in the region to provide customers faster data connection speeds and better call quality.
Etisalat UAE now operates subsidiaries in other parts of the Middle East, which includes, among many others, Egypt, Sudan, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Pakistan, and India, making the network provider the sixth largest company in the Middle East in terms of revenue. All in all, Etisalat covers 16 countries, the total population of which is 446 million.
